Joe, if your gonna compete you should get a box to make sure you get to depth. Your squats as is may be a little high. Tis better to train depth, for competing powerlifters only, then weight.

I never been to a full powerlifting event to know how deep you must go for squats. I have done push-pull comps with deadlifts and bench press. I would like to attend a full competition someday to learn the rules better and see them put to work.
For now I will stick to the safety bars without the box, As you may notice in the videos I usually am training alone in the gym and if I ever injure myself there is no help.

I never been to a full powerlifting event to know how deep you must go for squats. Easiest way, is to take the weight off and squat till your ass touches your heels. Thats how deep a proper squat is performed.

Thanks for the comments guys I don't mind a little critizism, it's not offensive it just gives me an idea on where to improve. I know my squats only go to parallel but that is good enough for now. I can go lower, I stop when my arms touch the bar. Mr. Powell I respect your records and you are a strong guy but I studied your videos of the 310kg and 315kg squat and they weren't exactly "ass to grass" maybe two inches lower than mine but you definetly can squat more than me right now P.S. Ed I dont have a brother named Trevor, I think I know which Trevor you are talking about, he is one powerful guy.

Hey Joe I would not discount a 585 squat without knee wraps and a squat suit.A 585 raw squat is over 700 " I think" with gear on.One thing you are doing wrong if you are thinking of competing down the road is that you can not place your hands against the plates. By the way I am an expert on high squats.Never have gone 3 for 3 in squats in a contest. I think that if you take your hands off the plates when your hands hit the safety bar you will be low enough. Also think you should squat looking away from the mirror. You may not realize it but it becomes a bad habit and does effect your squat form. If you are heading into Winnipeg let us know.Would the Feb contest work for you? Harvey

Harv,
Thanks for the pointers. I train legs today and I will try looking away from the mirror. The reason my hands are out by the bars is I cant get them in closer. If I bring them inside the collars the hooks on the rack are right in the way. I would have to stretch like hell to get them even closer. I will give my chest a good stretch and see if I can get them in.
I looked at the entry form for the Feb contest and one thing bothers me....I dont have a singlet or knee high socks. Where can I purchase these items? If I do make it down there it would not be to compete (maybe volunteer). I just want to meet the guys and see a contest and learn more. It really depends on the weather, since I must travel a bit.
Thanks again for the tips! - Joe

If your ass hits your heels at the bottom you too skinny. Start eating and lift heavy things. This is what happens when your 1rm is 20kg, start training Olympic Squater.

HAHA, I like that last one. Best way to end all the jibber jabber is to put up your own videos and let us critic them. If my knees would let me do that I would. Depth or not, THAT IS STRONG. If you start training in gear and are clean, you will be force!!!
pffff... ass to heels, LOL.

Harv, I tried doing squats today facing away from the mirror and it felt different at first but after a few sets it was good. I noticed my reps were much slower and more controlled but still managed to lift the same weight as last week. I was seeing some stars after the 6-plate squat.
At the end of the workout I managed to stretch enough to get my hands inside of the hooks for squats to much discomfort, I just did a dozen good reps with 225 like this. If I keep doing that I hope to get more flexible and harness the weight better. I also managed to get a good pintch on the hand when I set the weight down on the hooks, hahaha oh well...
P.S. Hey Travis, is squatting even an olympic event?

Big Joe Keep doing it as the more flexible you get the more it will actually help to keep your shoulders healthy for bench. For singlets,I have both and the Inzer is much easier to get on and off, particularly if you are adjusting a bench shirt between attempts. Harvey

I checked out the singlets on the Inzer link that Ed posted for me and I was wondering about sizes. Does anybody know what size I should order? I am 5'9", Chest 55", Legs 32", Waist 42". I was thinking about ordering a 2XL since this is what I normally use for clothes. I couldn't find more details on the website for sizing so maybe one of you guys know which size I should order.
