Hey guys. I just wanted to see if there would be much interest in a gym in Winnipeg that catered to powerlifters and other hardcore athletes?
A place where you could use chalk, bands, chains. A gym that would provide chain and jumpstretch bands so you wouldnt have to lug around cases of iron everywhere you went. A gym with jumpstretch deadlift platforms and safety squat bars, cambered squat bars, texas power bars, etc, etc?
There seems to be a total lack of any such facility in this city. We have more then enough Shapes gyms where if you make the slightest noise the manager glares at you, god forbid you do rack pulls.
I'm just trying to get a feeling for the interest level to present to future investors. I for one would love a place that had that family and community feeling of training together and progressing together.
Please post here if you would be willing to train at such a hardcore gym if one existed in winnipeg.
Thanks for your time and interest.
Will

I think I would roll a cot into one of those gyms and live there for the first 6 months so i could try all the exercise variations I'v heard about, but never had the equipment to do them with...I guess I'm trying to say that I would definitely train at a gym like that, and i could find a couple dozen guys to come with me

LOL
We are looking at one place that has a nice basement, you could crash there if you bring in a few members...LOL
We already have most of the equipment we need. What we dont have here in storage is on order and will show up soon.
If all goes well the gym should be open by June. The one place we really like is available in May and we will need some time to put in showers and what not as it was not a gym before.
I was just wanting to check if there was an interest in such a place. I reckon the more interest I can show investors the happier they will be to pitch in.
All powerlifters with valid memberships in a competitve federation would recieve a discount as well. The gym rate will be priced low to start with. Far lower then other commercial gyms as it will be a smaller place.

Hope to see a few more posts, any help is appreciated. I can be contacted at :

Thanks guys

Didn't we try this for about 10 years, and finally got tired of beating a dead horse?
Never mind the location........What's the rent? And I bet we can figure out if this bird will fly.

It will be small. I have 3 properties in mind now all are 2000-3000 sq feet. One has a good basement though that could be used for some equipment or for change room thus freeing up more space upstairs.
The equipment was a bargain for the most part. A friend down south was closing up his place and I got a ton of stuff (some bodybuilding stuff too) for a fraction of normal cost.
Originally we were just going to rent a storage shed like Jackals gym and have it there, but now with the extra equipment we are going to get a real building. My buddy through in a star trac treadmil and cable crossover with cable row and lat pulldown for free....
We are looking for about 60 members for the first year, mostly powerlifters and hardcore bodybuilders. I do know 2 fitness/figure girls that will be there too. I promised them I'd get abit more cardio and am talking with a few guys about buying 3 more peices right away.
The location will be downtown or north end-ish area. Near where Transcanda used to be. At least that is where we are looking now but please if anyone knows of a better place or has seen a property for sale that is a deal let us know as we are open to all suggestions.
Thanks guys.

I would relocate my Family to the city for a gym like that. All that I have to do is convince my Wife. Wish me luck.

I would definately like to train in a place like that, and Im guessing so would my dad. The only thing that's keeping him from looking for a better gym right now is that we train at the Y and they have a sauna + pool.

Pool at the Y is nice. We wont have room for one. Maybe a sauna or whirlpool one day but not to start.
Most likely location will be near logan. Next week we are looking at 3 more places all in that area, although my business partner mentioned something about a place on portage near polo park, havent looked at it yet though.
Either way hopefully we will be open by June.
We will work out some deal for people with pre existing memberships. Not sure on details yet but somehow we will honor other gym passes and make it easy enough for guys to switch gyms without costing everyone a ton, and of course without us losing too much cash.
Plans are also to have free memberships for police officers. I heard Metroflex did that in Texas and it seemed like a nice gesture. I know cops usually have their own place to train but just in case they want something different it will be free for them.

Just got in another full set of jumpstretch bands as well, probably have a few bench shirts and other gear around the place to in case someone forgets theres or something. Of course we will have chalk on site. Chalk wont be allowed in all areas of the gym(cardio area and areound certain machines), but in the power rack/deadlift/bench area you will be able to use it. We want the place to be somewhat clean so hopefully no one will go nuts, but for sure chalk will be allowed.
Right now I have 2 complete sets of bands and tons and tons of 5/8 chain. We will get more bands as the months pass. We also have a steel log and some more farmers walk equipment coming in now.
I dont plan to just settle and never buy any new equipment, we will add new stuff as money comes in.
I am looking for a reverse hyper machine and monolift as well, but again these will be added later on.

Right Now, The 17 Wing Strength club has a "Dungeon" (actually the old mechanical room where we weighed in for the on base meets). You can feel free to chalk yourself silly, use baby powder, suit up, and drop weights (as required, using common sense of course). It is still a work in progress, but it is intended for "hardcore" lifting away from the spandex set. We have a basic set-up so far, maybe lacking a decent power rack, but that can change pretty soon.

This may not be the facility that Big Willy is speaking of, but at 17 Wing Rec centre I recently acquired some space (the mechanical room) and I would like to see if it is feasible to expand our membership. As it stands, we have some olympic weights on loan from the MWA, some benches, racks, weights, bar and a platform on loan from the MPA, and some of my own equipment. The membership rates are quite reasonable (included in the recreation fee for military members) and competitive with local gyms. Now if we can expand our membership, I can possibly negotiate the purchase of more equipment (as club members, your opinion will count). (If the MPA has any equipment in storage we can put it to use for its members right here, and free up your basement or garage space).
Is anybody interested? (as it stands right now, there are only a few of us using the space).
